After graduating from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, MO, in 2009, Heather moved with her now-husband back to his hometown of Omaha to begin her career. Passionate about helping people, Heather continues to seek opportunities to work with clients across the lifespan and with a variety of genetic and acquired conditions, from families with toddlers learning to talk, to teenagers working on the dreaded /s/ /th/ and /r/ trifecta, to adults recovering from strokes with word finding and/or swallowing difficulties.
Where There's a Need, There's a Way
While working with adults and children with developmental disabilities, Heather discovered a passion for creating language systems via Augmentative and Alternative Communication to assist clients who would not otherwise have a voice. Likewise, Heather became LSVT-LOUD and eLOUD certified, PROMPT trained, McNeil Dysphagia Therapy Program Certified, as well as VitalStim certified, to help specific clients who could benefit from those programs. Heather is frequently scouring the latest research for new theories, techniques, and approaches to traditional therapy.
If We're Not Having Fun With Our Hard Work, Therapy Isn't Working
One of Heather's favorite activities from graduate school involved the professor emptying her pockets and having every student create a lesson plan using what was on hand. Heather takes this principle into all sessions, using what's in the immediate environment as much as possible to create dynamic, real-life therapy sessions. Whether assisting a stroke survivor in relearning how to use their cellphone, or using imaginative play with a child learning to use their communication device to comment, protest, or request, Heather delights in learning about all her clients' interests to keep therapy engaging.
